PRESS RELEASE:
A refreshing start to summer awaits Morgantown when works by award-winning watercolorist Lynn Ferris are exhibited at the Monongalia Arts Center. The exhibition, entitled “Glimpses of Life,” will host a public opening reception on June 5, 2009 from 6-8PM in the Benedum Gallery of MAC.
Ferris, who is originally from New Jersey but now calls Berkeley Springs, WV home, attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. When discussing her choice of medium, Ferris said, “I work exclusively in watercolor, for among other things, its luminosity.” She acknowledged that watercolor also has its challenges because the process happens quickly and an artist must make quick decisions. She explained that the preparatory time spent sketching allows her to begin thinking and planning how to manage different areas of the painting.
Ferris’s mastery shows not only in the vibrancy and dream-like elegance of her work, but also in the numerous awards she has earned. In 2008, Ferris received a painting award from the Tarpon Springs Fine Arts Festival, an Award of Excellence from the Mount Dora Art Festival, and a Societies Award from the Florida Watercolor Society. In 2007 she received the Susan Lattner Lloyd Gold Award, also from the Florida Watercolor Society. Her work as even garnered the cover of scholarly journals, with her painting “The Group” being featured as the cover art for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
In addition to her professional painting, Ferris has taught numerous watercolor workshops throughout the United States, including the Loveland Museum of Art, Leesburg Center for the Arts, and the Crealde School of Art.
Ro Brooks, Executive Director of MAC, said, “We are just thrilled to be able to bring Lynn’s work to Morgantown. Her paintings are truly a breath of fresh air. The colors seem so soft and light, but the images are complex and give senses of either action or action about to happen. I can’t think of a better way to start summer.”
For her “Glimpses of Life” exhibition, Ferris explains, “The subject matter of this exhibit will be people, character studies, not portraiture. They evoke a mood or story, many of which the viewer brings his own experiences to.”
The opening reception for “Glimpses of Life” will be Friday, June 5, 2009 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM in the Benedum Gallery of the Monongalia Arts Center. The reception is free and open to the public, and the Benedum Gallery is accessible to those with disabilities.
