THE ANCIENT SOUNDS OF THE KORA FIND THEIR WAY TO MAC

MAC invites you to enjoy exotic sounds from across the globe with Sean Gaskell. Sean, a musician based in Asheville, NC who is bringing the unique sound of West Africa to the Tanner Theatre. He will perform on the Kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp, featuring traditional songs that are the heart and soul of the Koras musical repertoire in addition to some of his own personal compositions. Many songs tell ancient stories of war and hardship, while others praise people of high political status and those who helped expand the Mande Empire. The 300 year-old Kora is native to the Mande peoples who live within the countries of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. His style could be described as World Music.

Sean first discovered the string instrument in 2006 and became inspired; so inspired that he took two trips to Gambia to learn to play the kora as it is played traditionally. Gaskell has studied extensively under the instruction of Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh of Brikama, The Gambia, and Kane Mathis of Brooklyn, NY. Gaskell has been featured at numerous festivals in the US, Gambia, and Senegal.

Tickets are currently available for this one-night only performance on Thursday, March 18 at

8 PM in the Tanner Theatre. Admission is $10.
